A CLOSER LOOK AT LONG ISLAND H.S. RUNNING
RANKINGS
11/12/07

Long Island Public and Catholic School harriers had their big championships at opposite ends of the state this past Saturday.  The NYSPHSAA State Championships were held way, way upstate in Norwood-Norfolk and the CHSAA Intersectional Championships were run at venerable Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.

Highlighting the States for LIers, was a State Class B Team Championship for Shoreham Wading River.  SWR came out flying at the Jim Smith Meet in early September and never looked back.  As always, Coach Szymanski had his troops ready at the right time and won their race fairly comfortably (if there is such a thing for a coach in the hunt).  Individually, Kyle Merber of Half Hollow Hills West won the State Class A Championship and had the 2nd fastest time of the day, while Emily Lipari won her State Class Championship with the fastest time of the day.  There were many top performances from Sections VIII and XI.

At the CHSAA Championships, Thomas Elnick continued his winning ways with a “controlled” 12:59 at Vanny.  Elnick was being pressured by D’Emic of Xavier and Ortega from Monsignor McClancy with 600m to go, and still beat them by 8 and 10 seconds respectively.  There’s more in the tank for Tom, and he’ll need every ounce at the upcoming State Federation Championships this Saturday in Wappinger Falls.

Chaminade continues to impress with their tight, aggressive finishes.  This veteran team won their race easily over a banged up Kellenberg team.  Coach Carriero has done an outstanding job with these guys, who should be in the mix for all the marbles this weekend.  Coach Bill Carriero continues to produce top level teams in the state and is closing in on being the all-time winningest coach in the 81 year history of the CHSAA.

What will the Federation Meet bring for LIers?  It should be exciting, as always, in the deepest and toughest one-race state championship in the nation.  Go get it done!

Championships bring out the best and worst of athletes.  There were some outstanding performances for teams and individuals while other performances were baffling.  The Conference Championships have been decided in Nassau while Division Champions were crowned in Suffolk.  The overall Section XI tilte went as expected, to Smithtown, for the boys and in a huge upset, Northport captured the title on the girls side.  At the Nassau-Suffolk Catholic Schools Championships, the best team battle of the season came down to a 6th man tiebreaker, which was won by a hard charging Chaminade squad over highly touted Kellenberg.  For the girls, St. John the Baptist won their 3rd consecutive CHSGAA Championship.  I love this time of the season!!!!

This weekend seemed to be the quiet before the storm.  Not too many changes except Syosset girls jumping to the top of the Nassau rankings, Northport trying desperately to close the gap with Ward Melville, and Emily Lipari back to the top of Nassau individual rankings.  The next few weeks should be fun.

Here are the rankings for the week of 9/30.  As we get into October, things are starting to heat up.  Names and teams that were not previously in the mix have surfaced, while some teams and individuals are trying to figure out how to reverse the downward trend their teams have begun after an over-anxious start.  Take heart!  It can be done with some careful planning and patience!  I enjoy doing the rankings for all interested parties.  I hope you are enjoying them, too.
